Social Media and Leadership
8:30 am until 12:30 pm
(Continental breakfast: 8:30, lunch & business meeting: 11:30)
PLACE: PSBA, 400 Bent Creek Road, Mechanicsburg, PA

As we start a new calendar year, we look forward to continue learning with our Study Council colleagues and extending our understanding and use of the tools of this digital era to improve the breadth and depth of student learning. You will recall that part of our goal is to identify how we might use those tools as part of a strategy to change what Michael Snell has called “the current outdated model.” And part of our goal is to identify leadership challenges that emerge from the digital era and work through ways to address them.

In this session, we will again work with Jayson Richardson and Nick Sauers, both from CASTLE (the Center for the Advanced Study in Technology Leadership). We will focus on how leaders can leverage social media to extend their personal learning network, to extend their reach of their current roles, and to engage with a wider range of stakeholders. This session will:
  • build on the work we did last year with Twitter and Facebook, and add Voxer from you work with Joe Mazza;
  • review how to use these tools then go deeper into how to use them (and other tools) to serve your leadership needs; and
  • give you tangible techniques to implement a communication strategy.

We will also cover challenges and how to overcome those challenges.

Session 4: Customizing Leadership in a Digital Era: Differentiated Leaders

May 26, 2015

9:00am - 11:30am

In this session, we will look at the implications for technology for how districts structure what they do. At one level, we see districts using technology to replace libraries with media centers, or learning hubs. At another level, some districts are replacing traditional content coaches (e.g., math coaches) with “instructional media coaches” or “leadership customization engineer.” What new structures and positions are districts creating, and what older structures are they eliminating in order to afford the evolving structures?

Pre-Session Task: Using the questions about PD from our last session, interview a teacher at one of your schools. Here is the interview protocol:

Session 3: Customizing Leadership in a Digital Era: Differentiated Leaders

February 24, 2015

9am - 11:30am

This session focuses on “differentiating leadership.” That is, as we encourage teachers to “differentiate instruction” and to use technology to enable that differentiation, how might you use technology to “differentiate your leadership?”

Session 2: Getting the most out of collaborative workspaces

November 25th, 2014 Agenda
9am - 11:30am

Description:
Technology has always promised to increase efficiency and effectiveness. Yet those promises are rarely met as technology seems only to increase pressures and demands – as we are available via “smart phone” 24/7/356, as technology creates the possibility of overabundance of information, etc. We’ll look at ways to get a handle of technology in ways that enable you to maximize time for important things. This may include looking at such questions as: How does technology enable superintendent leadership? How can superintendents model technology use technology for principals and others in their districts? How can superintendents interact with the overabundance of information in ways that model the ways principals, teachers and students deal with an overabundance of information?

Guiding questions
  • What dispositions do tech savvy superintendents hold?
  • What possibilities for collaboration does digital leadership open, and what tools can help superintendents do it?
  • How can blogging help me as a district leader?
